Botanical Gardens at Berkley

I love plants. I like watching them grow and change. I like talking to my kids about the science of plant life, the role they play in our environment and just marveling at their beauty.

Recently for my birthday my family indulged me by going with me to the Botanical Gardens at Berkley. If you ever have the chance to go, do. They have amazing grounds with plants divided by regions from here in California to the Mediterranean to Africa, Asia and Australia....it's huge. If it wasn't so hot on the day we went I could've stayed all day.

My kids got a real kick out of the carnivorous plants like the venus fly trap and the pitcher plants. Nearby there's a greenhouse with ferns and orchids, which I love. I tried to show my kids the large spores on the back of the fern fronds but they were already off and running.
I'll likely go back this fall to spend some more time. I reference nature a lot in my work and there was plenty of inspiration to be found. For now, I'll share with you a few of my pictures from our visit this summer. Hope you enjoy.

Some lovely and unique plants! You have plenty to inspire new drawings and ideas. I’ll be looking forward to seeing them.
